ENF 2007 - Emulating the Mind

The goal of this book is to create a memorandum for a new research community.

The community integrates psychoanalysis and engineering.

Until January 2008 we collect contributions for the memorandum, which will be reviewed and the top-notch contributions will be integrated in a book which is to be published in August 2008.

The one-day forum serves as a discussion platform to introduce the participants into the new research area. The outcome of the forum is the source for creating the memorandum.

Goals of the Forum

• To introduce the psychoanalytic model of the "psychic apparatus" into artificial intelligence (AI)
• To build up a new community with biannual conferences
• To create an interdisciplinary network of engineers, Neuroscientists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, pedagogues
• Design a unitary model of mental functions
• Use the model for technical systems and simulations of psychological functions
• This forum is the starting point for a future biannual conference

Central Questions

• How can we modularize mental functions for our purposes?
• How can we simulate the mental functions?
• Where are the big gaps and barriers among the various disciplines?
• Which challenges do we have to expect in the near future?
• How can psychoanalysis support Artificial Intelligence?
• Why have engineers ignored results and knowledge of psychoanalysis?
• Should we distinguish between emotions and feelings?
• How can we unify the specifications of basic emotions and drives?
• How can we implement consciousness in a machine?
