Today’s markets and economies are becoming increasingly volatile, unpredictable, they are changing radically and even the innovation speed is accelerating. Manufacturing and production technology and systems must keep pace with this trend. Adaptive Manufacturing is identified by the European Manufacture High-Level Group to be one of four major drivers of industrial technologies in “Manufacturing 2020”. Distributed embedded real–time systems for industrial automation and control of plants that evolve towards downtimeless adaptable systems will play a key role to realize the roadmaps towards adaptive manufacturing of products, goods and services in 2020.

A key technology for this next generation distributed automation and control systems is the standard IEC 61499. A huge amount of research has been done by use of the models of the standard for advantageous application in engineering, verification and distribution. This special session will focus on the very important topic of downtimeless reconfiguration by use of IEC 61499. This regards to the capability of changing low-level control logic as sufficient basis for providing Adaptive Manufacturing. The standard provides just the basis for this capability—many challenges still have to be investigated to apply this technology in industrial automation.

The following topics should be presented within this special session:

  • Engineering methodologies for downtimeless reconfiguration
  • Execution of real-time reconfiguration
  • Challenges regarding the application in industrial automation

The topic of this special session is directly related with the national funded projects µCrons ( and eCEDAC ( Both projects are situated within the FIT-IT Embedded Systems program, an initiative of the Austrian federal ministry of transport, innovation, and technology (bm:vit). Both are finishing within the next months, therefore considerable results can be presented and discussed in comparison to related international research.
